Although john is "uncivilized" and relatively free, he is also a manipulated product of his world (religion, past, Shakespeare). John meets Bernard and Lenina after they witness a blood sacrifice. In many ways the place John was born in is far different from the New World, with there being more natural births taking place and ritualistic dances. Perpetual conditioning from birth are definitely significant but nonetheless even our most innocent experiences can have devastating effects on our psyche. John is a unique character, he was the child of parents from the New World but was raised in the reservation.

Huxley sinisterly shows us the susceptibility of mankind. John didn't choose suicide, it was a product of his belief system and character.

He was a product of the world in which he lived in and of the people whose influence shaped his being. John's final act was a consequence of his character a character which was shaped by his religious convictions and obsessive literalism of Shakespearean works. Although John is uncivilized by their standards, since he is not a victim of the conditioning and the indoctrinations of the society, he's still a victim of the exterior influences in his life. But after a bit of contemplation my opinion on the matter began to transform. His final response to the world seemed to me like an act of a martyr. He succumbed to this brave new world (through his participation in the orgy) and felt that the only way to atone and salvage whatever is left of his individuality is by doing the only thing that no one in that society dares doing, committing suicide. Initially, I viewed John's suicide as a final act of resistance against the state. The efforts to impose individuality failed in Huxley's novel but the latest utopia in Peacock's Brave New World was left with more hope as a new figure emerges in the key leadership role.(Spoilers lie ahead). The utopia may deeply believe that they achieved stability but it's nearly impossible to control a large population with the reliance on technology and trust.

That separation becomes greater when John's presence in New London sheds new light on the state's governance. Instead, they form one common identity which is shared throughout the city.Įven with harmony among genders and races, there's an obvious imbalance among the class hierarchy that Alphas fall to recognize. They are assigned a class and conditioned to perceive Alphas as superiors and Betas as subordinates. Those in New London prioritize stability by losing sight of any kind of individuality. New citizens aren't birthed by existing humans and instead produced by a hatchery program. Though the series doesn't hammer down a motto, their laws were made with the same goals in mind.
